Coach Palladino has accumulated over 500 wins in his high school career, having coached at Portland, St. Paul, University of Hartford, and Notre Dame (West Haven). Coach has been inducted into several halls of fame, including the University of Hartford (1995), Bristol Sports Museum (1998), Connecticut High School Coaches Association (2002), New England Basketball Coaches (2003), New Haven Tap-Off Club (2006), St. Paul High School (2007) and joined the New England Basketball Players Hall of Fame.
Gene Reilly (1972-2007)
Coach Reilly spent 35 years at Portland.
He won 547 basketball games, the sixth highest total in state history. His team won the 1982 Class S title. His baseball team won the ’88 S title. Coach pushed his players in a unique way that brought the best out of each of them. This resulted in 13 Charter Oak Conference championships over his tenure.
He was named the Connecticut High School Coaches Association Basketball Coach of the Year in 1998. He received a Gold Key from the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance in 2004 and is a member of the New England Basketball Hall of Fame. He touched the lives of numerous students and athletes that he taught and coached.
Coach will forever be remembered as a coaching icon in the State of Connecticut.
Nate Turner (2007-2013)
Coach Turner was a player and assistant coach under Coach Reilly, until taking over the program in 2007. Coach played on the 1988 state championship baseball team under his mentor Coach Reilly. Coach Turner has had a positive impact on all of the student-athletes he has coached. Coach Turner is a huge fan of all the kids in Portland, and continues to be a mentor to the players and the program.
